Welcome to the Instructional Communication Research Collaborative Sandbox.

This material is here for us to practice editing so we all feel more comfortable and are more capable of contributing to the main pages.

Wikis, as you may know, are server-side applications that allow a group of people to write and modify the same document. I recommend that you compose any substantial contribution (50 words or more) on a word processor, then cut and paste the material into the wiki document. [Hint: I have found that if you want to put a figure into a document, it is best to put it first in a PowerPoint slide and save it as a GIF. Then you can insert the figure into your document as an image.]

This page will evolve as the group comes to the sandbox to play.
Some Suggested Conversation Maps: Mentoring Teaching

Helping a colleague prepare to teach a class by:

• Clarifying lesson goals

• Anticipate or envision the teaching strategies and decisions for the class

• Determine evidence of student achievement (How will you know if “they got it”?)

• Discuss what the instructor wants you to observe; try to be as specific and concrete as possible.

Helping a colleague reflect on teaching by:

• Asking colleague to summarize impressions and self-assessment of the class

• Asking colleague to recall “data” supporting self-assessment

• Having colleague make comparisons between what was planned and what happened

• Helping colleague make inferences about how the instructor s behaviors and student achievement are related.

• Asking colleague to apply what was learned in the reflection to next class session

Helping a colleague to develop his or her strengths through affirmative inquiry:

General questions designed to create a foundation of success:

• Describe in as much detail as possible a course, a class session or part of a class session that you recall with pride.

• Speculate on the conditions, forces or behaviors that helped to make that peak performance happen.

• How can you recreate that experience in your present and future classes?

Specific questions designed to focus your mentee on specific dimensions of teaching

• Note some of your techniques that were effective in generating student involvement

• Cite some examples of effective use of positive reinforcement in your teaching

• Describe some ways you know you deepened student understanding of course content

• Describe some instances where your purposeful alteration of instruction led to better student outcomes in terms of their attitudes, knowledge or skills.
